GENERATORS

Don't wait until Hurricane Season to deal with your backup power needs.

Floridians know from experience that hurricanes, and even tropical storms, can leave us without power for days, or weeks at a time.

As our population continues to grow, and our power grid ages, we also face the real possibility of rolling power outages.

There is a backup power solution for every situation and every budget. Let a K & S Electric, Inc. technician help determine the right choice for you.

Standby GeneratorsStandby generator

A standby generator is permanently connected to your home. When a power failure occurs, the generator starts automatically to provide backup power. Residential standby generators are usually larger and more powerful than portable generators. They are fueled by natural gas or propane (rather than an internal gas tank), and are hardwired into your homes electrical system (rather than plugging in cords). The advantage is that the backup power comes on automatically in a power outage and disconnects automatically when utility power is restored, a necessity for those with electrical medical apparatus. Standby generators are more costly then their portable counterparts.
Portable Generators15KW portable generator

Unlike a standby generator, portable generators are not permanently affixed to your house. They are typically less powerful and less expensive than standby units. Most portable generators are started via a pull cord (similar to that of a lawnmower), have built-in fuel tanks and power outlets that accommodate multiple household extension cords.

Inlet Plugs

Until recently, the only way to get power into your home from a portable generator was by running extension cords from the unit directly to the equipment that you wanted to use. This meant having the generator operating near an open window, or in the garage.  Both ways left home owners vulnerable to carbon monoxide entering the home, as well as the tripping hazard presented by the use of extension cords. Installing an inlet plug at your breaker panel does away with these hazards by removing the need to use extension cords. By using an inlet plug set-up you can chose where in your home Weatherproof inlet box w/ cord connection in frontto direct the backup power and even run your air conditioner if you have an appropriate sized generator.
